Alliance for Justice is a project in which workers who are facing problems at their work sites, volunteers willing to help their coworkers and all the action teams of the Organization come together to find effective solutions, organize and fight against the common struggles of Latino immigrant workers .
This project is not only the place where laborers can reach to solutions for the problems they are currently dealing with, but is the perfect site to gain experience in conflict resolution and awareness on their rights.
The project counts with two Justice Commities focusing in different groups of laborers. The Industrial Cleaning Laborers Justice Comittee (LOVELI) focuses on workers experiencing problems in the industrial cleaning area meets on Saturdays at 10 am . The Justice Commitee for Restaurant, stores and factory workers etc (MILI) , serving laborers from different industries particularly factories meets at 7pm on Thursdays.
Results of our Activism
The efforts of the Alliance in collaboration with organizations such as Urban Justice , government agencies including the New York State Department of Labor and the Equal Employment Opportunity Comission (EEOC), lawyers and volunteers have resulted in workers recovering millions of dollars over the past five years. Indeed, in 2008 $304,149.00 was recovered in unpaid salaries.
Furthermore, the Alliance for Justice project has opened 147 new cases representing 67% of all active cases within the organization. Eventhough fear and lack of information restrain victims of descrimination and verbal and sexual harassment to report these abuses, the Alliance for Justice on 2009 submitted over 20 complaints to the Human Rights Comission and the EEOC for their investigation. Three cases of retailiation have also been filed with the National Labor Relations Board.
