Achievements and Community Recognition

Over the years we have achieved:

  • Recovery of more than $3 million dollars in unpaid wages.
  • In 2006, we ensured the passage of the Nassau County Domestic Worker Protection Act.
  • In 2010, in alliance with other organizations we were instrumental in the drafting and passing of the New York State Domestic Workers Bill of Rights.
  • In March 2010, a group of day laborers exposed themselves to the risk of deportation by marching for ten days from Hempstead, Long Island to Washington, DC to demand comprehensive immigration reform and an end to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids against our community.
  • Defeat of anti-immigrant legislation and ordinances—specifically anti day laborer laws in Oyster Bay and evictions of Latino/a renters in Farmingville and the town of Brookhaven.
  • The participation of more than 5,000 immigrant workers across Long Island in the 2010 US Census.
  • Thousands of workers educated about their rights as workers.
  • The creation of a solid membership base
  • In 1997 we helped pass the New York State Unpaid Wages Prohibition Act.
